Dental crowns and bridges are among the most common restorative treatments in dentistry. A crown caps a damaged tooth to restore its shape and strength, while a bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the teeth on either side. Both are custom-made to match the colour and form of your natural teeth.
What Is a Crown & Bridge?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is cemented over a prepared tooth. It fully covers the visible part of the tooth above the gum line, restoring its size, shape, strength and appearance. Crowns are used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but the root is still healthy.
A dental bridge spans the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by crowns attached to the neighbouring teeth (abutments). Bridges are a fixed, non-removable alternative to partial dentures.
Types of materials
| Material | Pros | Cons | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain (ceramic) | Natural appearance, tooth-coloured | Can chip under heavy bite force | 5,000 - 9,000 NOK |
| Zirconia | Extremely strong, natural look, biocompatible | Higher cost | 7,000 - 12,000 NOK |
| Metal (gold alloy) | Very durable, gentle on opposing teeth | Visible metallic colour | 6,000 - 11,000 NOK |
| Porcelain-fused-to-metal | Strong core with natural surface | Dark line may show at gum margin over time | 5,000 - 10,000 NOK |
What to Expect
Appointment 1 — Preparation
The dentist administers local anaesthesia and files down the tooth to create room for the crown. An impression (digital or putty) is taken and sent to a dental laboratory. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent restoration is fabricated, which usually takes 1-2 weeks.
For a bridge, the teeth on both sides of the gap are prepared in the same way to serve as anchors.
Appointment 2 — Fitting
The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown or bridge is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, bite and colour match. Once everything is correct, the restoration is permanently cemented.
Appointment 3 (if needed) — Follow-up
Some clinics schedule a short follow-up visit after 1-2 weeks to check that the bite feels comfortable and the gums around the crown are healthy.
Benefits
- Restores function — eat, speak and smile with confidence
- Protects weakened teeth from further damage or fracture
- Long-lasting — modern crowns and bridges last 10-20 years with proper care
- Natural appearance — porcelain and zirconia options are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth
- Fixed solution — unlike dentures, bridges are permanently cemented and do not need to be removed
- Preserves bite alignment — a bridge prevents neighbouring teeth from shifting into the gap

When to See a Dentist
Consider a crown or bridge if you experience any of the following:
- A cracked or fractured tooth that cannot be repaired with a filling
- A large cavity that has weakened the tooth structure significantly
- A missing tooth causing difficulty chewing or an uneven bite
- A tooth that has had root canal treatment and needs reinforcement
- Cosmetic concerns about the shape, size or colour of a damaged tooth
- An existing crown or bridge that feels loose, painful or looks worn
Acting promptly when a tooth is damaged can prevent the need for extraction and more costly replacements like implants later on.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does a dental crown last?
- A well-made dental crown typically lasts 10-20 years. Zirconia and gold crowns tend to last longer than all-porcelain options. Lifespan depends on oral hygiene, grinding habits and the position of the tooth in the mouth.
- What is the difference between a temporary and permanent crown?
- A temporary crown is made from acrylic or composite and protects the tooth while the permanent crown is fabricated in a dental laboratory. Temporaries are weaker and should only be worn for 1-3 weeks. Permanent crowns are custom-milled from porcelain, zirconia or metal.
- Can I eat normally with a crown or bridge?
- Yes, once the permanent crown or bridge is cemented, you can eat normally. Avoid biting directly into very hard foods like ice or hard candy with the crowned tooth. During the temporary phase, stick to softer foods and avoid sticky items like caramel.
- Does getting a crown hurt?
- The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should feel no pain during preparation. Some sensitivity is normal for a few days after the crown is placed, particularly to hot and cold.
- Is a dental bridge better than an implant?
- Both are effective solutions for missing teeth. A bridge is faster and less invasive since it does not require surgery, but it does require filing down adjacent teeth. An implant preserves neighbouring teeth and generally lasts longer. Your dentist can advise which option suits your situation.
