What Are Invisible Braces?

Invisible braces, or clear aligners (usynlig tannregulering), are a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays that gradually move your teeth into the desired position. The most well-known brand is Invisalign, but several other systems — such as ClearCorrect, Spark, and Angel Aligner — offer comparable technology.

Each set of aligners is worn for 1-2 weeks before moving on to the next set in the series. The aligners apply gentle, controlled pressure to shift teeth incrementally, following a treatment plan digitally mapped by your orthodontist.

What to Expect

Initial Consultation

Your orthodontist examines your teeth, takes digital scans or impressions, and discusses your goals. Using 3D software, they create a virtual treatment plan showing exactly how your teeth will move at each stage — many patients can preview their projected results before committing.

Receiving Your Aligners

Based on the treatment plan, a full series of aligner trays is manufactured. You'll receive several sets at a time and change to a new set every 1-2 weeks as directed.

During Treatment

• Wear aligners 20-22 hours per day
• Remove them only for eating, drinking (other than water), and brushing
• Visit your orthodontist every 4-8 weeks for progress checks and to receive new aligner sets
• Small tooth-coloured attachments (bumps) may be bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners grip more effectively

After Treatment

Once your teeth are in their final position, you'll wear a retainer — either a fixed wire behind the teeth or a removable retainer worn at night — to prevent relapse. Retainer use is essential for maintaining your results long-term.

Clear aligner treatment in Norway is priced based on complexity and duration:

• Mild cases (minor corrections): 25,000–35,000 NOK
• Moderate cases: 35,000–50,000 NOK
• Complex cases (full treatment): 50,000–60,000 NOK

Most orthodontic clinics offer interest-free payment plans or financing options to make treatment more accessible. Retainers are sometimes included in the total price and sometimes charged separately (typically 2,000–5,000 NOK).

Orthodontic treatment for adults is not covered by HELFO. For children and young adults under 20, orthodontic treatment through the public dental service may be partially or fully covered depending on the severity of the malocclusion.
